WINGHAM— The rural landscape north of Wingham is lush with traditional crops of corn and hay, but on one farm, aptly named Golden Orchard, rows of tidy shrubs sprouting bright orange berries seem almost out of place.
This is sea buckthorn, Ontario’s only citrus fruit and so packed with antioxidants and vitamin C that a handful of berries provide the recommended daily requirement. The woman behind this ambitious project is Marlene Wynnyk, a Kitchener-based social worker, founder of the supplement company The Healing Arc and a woman who loves the challenge of new ideas.
“When I bought this property (25 years ago), I wanted to teach my kids a good work ethnic and about nature,” said Wynnyk, now 68, a mother of 12 and grandmother of 23. The 32-hectare rural property was to be a place for her children to relax away from their Kitchener home, but it also became a horticultural laboratory.
